Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing is the new paradigm for producing industries. Established Industry 4.0 principles on data collection and analysis, machine learning, and cyber-physical systems allow to serve the goal of higher sustainability in manufacturing, which will be shown with examples of digital twins and unit manufacturing process models. Manufacturing and design are also instrumental in achieving holistically sustainable product life-cycles. Manufacturing leveraging can improve overall product sustainability if more resources are spent within the manufacturing phase to enhance the efficiency of the use phase. This becomes apparent with examples on surface engineering and bacterial attachment. Further example studies on manual manufacturing operations highlight the importance of the human-in-the-loop.
